지난해 7월 이민 수속 기간을 줄이겠다는 명분으로 전문인력이민(FSWP) 창구를 잠정 폐쇄한 캐나다 정부가 오는 5월 4일부터 접수를 재개한다.

새로 문을 연 전문인력이민제도는 내용 면에서 종전과 몇 가지 차이를 보인다. 우선 신청 가능한 직업군은 24개로 축소됐다.

또, 연간 5,000건, 직업군당 최대 300건의 신청서류만 받아들일 계획이다. 캐나다 국외에서 공부한 지원자들의 해외 교육인증을 위해 4개 기관은 새롭게 요구되는 인증평가를 제공하며, 지원자는 말하기, 읽기, 쓰기, 듣기 총 4영역에서 CLB(Canadian Language Benchmark) 레벨 7에 해당하는 증빙자료를 제출해야 한다.

제이슨 케니(Jason Kenney) 캐나다 연방이민부 장관은 달라진 전문인력이민제도를 통해 국내 기업이 필요로 하는 인력을 선별해 받아들이겠다는 뜻을 분명히 했다. 케니 장관은 “정부의 주된 관심은 고용창출과 장기적 관점에서의 번영이다”고 말했다.
